The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) is notifying residents about potential measles exposures in northern Virginia after confirming the state’s first case of 2025. Health officials are currently working to identify people who may have been exposed to this highly contagious virus at two locations in mid-April.
The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) has pinpointed possible exposure sites at Kaiser Permanente medical centers in Woodbridge and Fredericksburg. People who visited the Advanced Urgent Care at Kaiser Permanente Caton Hill Medical Center in Woodbridge on April 15 between 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. might have been exposed.
A second potential exposure happened at the Pediatrics Department of Kaiser Permanente Fredericksburg Medical Center on April 16 from noon to 5 p.m.
Listed below are the dates, times, and locations of potential exposure sites in Virginia:
- Kaiser Permanente Caton Hill Medical Center, Advanced Urgent Care, located at 13285 Minnieville Road in Woodbridge on Tuesday, April 15 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
- Kaiser Permanente Fredericksburg Medical Center, Pediatrics Department, located at 1201 Hospital Drive in Fredericksburg on Wednesday, April 16 from noon to 5 p.m.
The AHD advises that anyone who may have been exposed should check the news release for recommended actions.
If you were born before 1957 or have received the recommended doses of a measles-containing vaccine, like the MMR vaccine, you don’t need to take any action. However, if you were born after 1957 and aren’t fully vaccinated against measles, you should watch for symptoms for 21 days from the date of potential exposure.
Symptoms include a runny nose, fever above 101 degrees, cough, watery red eyes, and rash. If you experience these symptoms, isolate yourself and get medical care right away.
The AHD is encouraging all Alexandrians to ensure their immunizations are current.
Alexandria residents with questions about potential exposure can email [email protected] or call the Alexandria Health Department at 703.746.4988 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
